Leeds Goth Hall of Fame – World Goth Day Launch!

It’s almost time for the Halloween of Spring – yes, World Goth Day is just over a week away! With canny timing, that will also be the day the Leeds Goth Hall of Fame is launched with an exhibition at the Leeds City Museum, and I’m excited to be present as one of the panel judges.

The goth music genre and its attendant subculture is an incredibly rich legacy and deserves celebrating – nowhere more than in its home of Leeds, where definitive bands formed and the original goth nightclub was founded.

Moreso, that legacy has been continued and added to by hardworking stalwarts of the scene, and it is these contributors as well as the veteran founders we will celebrate on May 22nd – and if we’re very lucky, inspiring a whole new wave of fans, supporters and creators to carry on the fine traditions and dark innovations of UK goth.

The exhibition will remain for some time after the launch event. I can’t think of a better place to celebrate our subculture, on our special day. I hope to see some of you there, and for the rest I’ll share as much as I can over social media. (Un)happy World Goth Day in advance!

Ah, the Phono – the tiny dancefloor, the cramped stairs … and having the McDonalds staff sing the theme to the Addams Family when we went in for a post-clubbing meal before scattering to our various homes. (I was there in the mid-90s – not quite the glory days, but still fun nights out.)

Leeds in the 80’s must have been absolutely buzzing with the whole Sisters thing going on 🙂 Great post. Thank you.
